RE: Update on Windsor Elementary Technology Breach

Dear Windsor Elementary School Families:

As you are aware, there was a technology breach that occurred at Windsor School in early March. Unfortunately, a 7th grade student encountered another piece of inappropriate material today.

It is important to note that this was not the result of a new incident of unauthorized access to student accounts. Rather, it was the result of a student opening a document that had been shared with her by one of the originally affected students long before it was accessed by the unauthorized user.

The student immediately notified the building technology integrator who immediately removed access to that document and suspended the account.  The school contacted the student’s parents. Meanwhile technology staff revisited their review of all Google documents affected by the unauthorized access, determined whether they’d been shared with any other student, and took steps to delete them all.  Our review revealed that this document is the only document that had been shared with another student and that it was shared 17 months ago.

We take your child’s safety very seriously and regret our failure to have fully contained the incident when it occurred.  Our error was in confining our original search of shared documents to the current school year. We have adjusted our protocols so that this does not happen again. We will continue to work diligently to support all students.

Please contact me directly at the RSU 12 Central Office, 549-3261, or Dr. Maggie Allen at Windsor Elementary School, 445-2356, if you have any questions or concerns about this matter.

Sincerely,
